Before an Abortion

Planning on abortion? Here are 5 things you need to know.
From Nurse Gloria

  1. Are you sure you are pregnant?
Even if your home pregnancy test was positive, it should be verified. Our urine tests are free and are sensitive to 20 mlU/mL of hCG which means our test is accurate even before missing a period.
  2. Do you have a viable pregnancy?
One third of first pregnancies miscarry in the first trimester. Ectopic pregnancies are on the rise. You need to know if your pregnancy is viable (shows a heartbeat) and if it is in the right place (in the uterus and not in a fallopian tube). Only a sonogram can determine if your pregnancy is a viable, intrauterine pregnancy. The sonogram available at all four of our locations and it is free.
  3. How far along are you?
The type of abortion and the cost will be determined by the gestational age of your pregnancy (or how many weeks you have been pregnant). You can estimate from the first day of your last period but most women’s periods are not regular and many birth control options interrupt the normal menstrual cycle. The sonogram gives you the information you need to know. Every sonogram is interpreted by a doctor. This is important information to have in your decision making process. And it’s free no matter what you choose to do.
  4. Do you have an STD?
Women who undergo an abortion with an untreated STD are up to 25% more likely to develop PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease) following the procedure. PID can lead to serious consequences including infertility, ectopic pregnancy, abscess and chronic pelvic pain. Many women with STDs have no symptoms. If you’ve had sex, you need to get tested. We do that.
  5. Do you have all the facts?
Your health is important. We welcome your questions. Our nurses will listen and spend as much time as you need, providing you with all the facts so you can make a truly informed decision. You are never just a number here. Don’t decide alone. Make an appointment today to discuss all the options. WCN does not provide abortions or abortion referrals.
