Quick Facts about Mifeprex (RU-486 / Medical Abortion Pill)
- Taken within 10 weeks of LMP1
- Cost between $350 and $650
“I had a previous abortion using the abortion pill but I never really understood how it worked. The Nurse helped me a lot.”
Procedure
The FDA approved regimen 2 for Mifiprex (RU-486) is a two-visit process using two different drugs:
- The first medication, Mifeprex blocks progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary for the pregnancy to survive. Without progesterone, the growing pregnancy dies.
- The second medication, Mifipristone, causes cramping, and bleeding expelling the embryo and uterine contents.2
- A physical exam is given by the healthcare provider about 7-14 days later to ensure the abortion is complete and that there are no immediate complications.
