Quick Facts about Mifeprex (RU-486 / Medical Abortion Pill)

  • Taken within 10 weeks of LMP1
  • Cost between  $350 and $650

“I had a previous abortion using the abortion pill but I never really understood how it worked. The Nurse helped me a lot.”

Procedure

The FDA approved regimen 2 for Mifiprex (RU-486) is a two-visit process using two different drugs:

  1. The first medication, Mifeprex blocks progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone that is necessary for the pregnancy to survive. Without progesterone, the growing pregnancy dies.
  1. The second medication, Mifipristone, causes cramping, and bleeding expelling the embryo and uterine contents.2
  1. A physical exam is given by the healthcare provider about 7-14 days later to ensure the abortion is complete and that there are no immediate complications.
